Religious leaders have wished all Ethiopians a happy New Year, which starts tomorrow, September 12 of the Gregorian calendar.

In his greetings, Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Abune Mathias, called on Ethiopians to welcome the New Year leaving behind the damaging and unnecessary things that have passed.

 

“We should use the New Year for renewal, to love one another and for unity,” the Patriarch said.

President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Council, Mufti Haji Umer Idris, for his part said “we should plan for, rectify weaknesses, and stand united in the New Year.”

Berhaneyesus Souraphiel, Cardinal of the Ethiopian Catholic Church, said “we should renew ourselves to begin the New Year with hope.”

He also called on the haves to share with the have-nots during celebration of the New Year.

President of the Ethiopian Evangelical Church, Mekane Yesus (EECMY), Rev. Yonas Yigezu, said “we should be a model for others by performing well in the New Year.

The religious leaders wished all Ethiopian a happy new year.

Ethiopia welcomes the New Year (2012) tomorrow. There is an eight-year gap between Ethiopian calendar and the Gregorian calendar according to ENA.
